Micro-drama, a new strategic format in audiovisual fiction
On March 5, 2026, the EICAR film school hosted a breakfast organised by médiaClub International, dedicated to the rise of micro-drama. The panel, moderated by Jennifer Sabbah, producer and consultant, brought together Bo Zhang, a specialist in international development between Europe and Asia, and Guillaume Sanjorge, producer and founder of Duanju.news.
Discussions covered the format's meteoric rise in China, growing from roughly $500 million in 2021 to nearly $7 billion in 2024, its international expansion through platforms such as ReelShort, DramaBox and NetShort, as well as new business models (mobile-first, micropayments, subscriptions) and the growing role of artificial intelligence in production. The meeting also opened a discussion on the opportunities micro-drama offers European producers and creators.
